Canards Why? • Pusher arrangement: balancing a pusher with a conventional layout is very difficult and often impossible (ex. Wright Flyer, Curtis XP-55, Kyushu J7W1).
Canards Why? • Stable pitch break @ stall of the canard provided the canard is designed to stall before the wing (ex.Rutan Varieze, Beech Starship). Note the strakes in both ac, designed to: • Provide fuel volume close to the empty cg • Delay wing stall Starship also features variable sweep canard to trim negative PM of wing flaps.
Canards Why? • In conventional tail-aft configurations the tail lifts down for trim. In canard configurations the canard lifts up for trim. • Items 2 & 3 combined give lower D and higher trimmed L. • Longitudinal control surfaces are in front of the wing out of its downwash and never in its wake. • Change of pitch attitude is more direct and therefore faster w. a canard. This is very desirable for highly maneuverable ac.
