Question #1: Is the plan for Chaparral Elementary to increase to Gr. 6? Answer: No. Chaparral will be Kindergarten to Grade 4; Fish Creek School will accommodate Chaparral grades 5 & 6; students will then go to Midsun Junior High for grades 7-9.
Question #2: If 100 kids come in per year it will not accommodate K-4 long range. Answer: The opening day capacity of Chaparral school is 400 – there are plans to add an additional 50 spaces in relocatable classroom space for a built-out capacity of 450. This number of spaces will accommodate 100 students/grade for K-4.
Question #3: When you say modular, is it different from a portable? Answer: The CBE uses two types of modular units – portables and relocatables. Portable units are free-standing and are not attached to the core school whereas relocatable units are attached to the core school. Chaparral School has been designed to accommodate 2 additional relocatable units which will be attached to the school.
Question #4: Are relocatables easier to get? Answer: The infrastructure funding comes from the Alberta Government and the process for funding approval is the same for both portable and relocatable units.
Question #5: What is the number of Chaparral grade 5 and 6 students feeding into Sundance schools in future years? Answer: Data to be provided at the April 5/06 meeting.
Question #6: What is the number of student spaces in the two schools? Answer: Based on the provincial capacity formula, there are 1087 students spaces between the two schools – Sundance, 473; Fish Creek, 614. The rated room capacities which is based on each classroom holding 25 students are higher than the provincial capacity – Sundance, 502; Fish Creek, 673. These formulas are not related to the Alberta Learning class size initiative.
Question #7: What are the two junior high schools that students from Area V are designated to for French Immersion? Answer: Fairview and Elboya. There are currently 250 kids bused out of Area V to Elboya. We are looking at the long-range plans for French Immersion in Area V. Dr. E.P. Scarlett is the designated French Immersion high school and has returned many kids from Central Memorial High. Next year grades 10 through 12 French Immersion will be attending Dr. E.P. Scarlett and it is the junior high piece we need to work on.
Question #8: Are the new communities going to be designated to Sundance and Fish Creek Elementary schools? Answer: At this time, there are no plans to designate any additional developing communities to schools in the Sundance community for the Regular Program. Into the future we will need another French Immersion school in the south. We need to pay attention to that as well as this in relation to our long-term plans.
Question #9: What is the plan to accommodate the community of Silverado? Answer: Silverado is already designated to Ethel M. Johnson for the regular program. French Immersion students are designated to Sundance School.
Question #10: Is the goal to keep both schools open – long term? Answer: Yes.

The 5 Year projection for students from the Sundance Community indicates a decline from 615 students ( K-6 (Including Sp Ed)) in 2006 to 384 students ( K-6 (Including Sp Ed)) in 2010. The total capacity of Sundance & Fish Creek schools is 1087 spaces.
