  1. BeingMoral Catholic Church’s Foundational Beliefs • Humans are moral beings commanded to love God and each other. • Gifted with freedom of choice, temptation is always present. • God gave Jesus as the model of full humanity and humans are redeemed through his life and sacrifice.

  2. Christian Decision Making Christian decision making involves: • Informing one’s conscience • Prayer • Drawing upon the life of Jesus and the wisdom of the Church.

  3. Being Moral Humans are moral beings called to love one another and love God. Humans are: • drawn to the good • gifted with freedom • tempted by sin • blessed by grace

  4. Freedom • What is freedom? Task: Read ‘The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Riley’ and consider the concept of freedom. What does it mean to be free? What does it mean not to be free?

The Role of Conscience • The Church speaks of conscience as ‘a law written by God’ in the human heart. • Conscience is how the human intellect makes judgments about right and wrong. • Conscience, the voice of our values and convictions, directs us towards integrity in our actions. However, decisions of conscience are complex. It can be limited, weak or uninformed, just as it can be clear, strong and knowledgeable. How do we inform our conscience?

  9. Why do we need Human Sexuality Education in Catholic schools? The Church believes that education in sexuality must not be dissociated from education in moral principles. Children must be guided in order to deepen their relationship with God and therefore reflect God in their moral living.
