  2. Who is Bandura? • In small groups, discuss and write on whiteboards what you remember about Bandura….

  3. Bandura Operant conditioning Imitation Reinforcement Modelling more effective of model is of a status Observe others behaviour If behaviour is then reinforced likely to occur again Interested in children modelling behaviour they observe Bobo Doll experiment Link to sport????

  4. Modelling in Sport • Footballer makes a hard and unfair tackle – gets away without a caution • At school the next day “ did you see that tackle yesterday? He's so brilliant” • Next match that friend is more likely to make a hard and unfair tackle • If he gets away with it and then receives ‘posties’ from his team mates then increasingly this aggression becomes a part of the boys behavioural repertoire • Any non aggressive modelling behaviour? • Wayne Rooney was advised by captain David Beckham to tie his shoelaces after being provoked rather than lash out • Highlighted on TV and through commentating ~ a lot of shoe lace tying in the parks that weekend!!

  5. Observational learning • Learning through observation of consequences ~ ???? • Vicarious reinforcement ~ consequence observed = favourable behaviour will be adopted by observer • Where might this happen??

Evaluation • How might these theories be applied to the area of Sport to reduce aggression? • Which theory would you use if you were the coach? • Justify your answer Discussion Questions: • Why do players resort to aggression and violent conduct when they know they will be penalised? • Why do coaches defend their players when they can clearly see that such aggression is counter-productive? • What role does the media play in perpetuating such aggression? • Outline 1 theory of Aggression in Sport (10marks) • How can instinct explain aggression in sport? (10marks) • Discuss nature and nurture in relation to aggression in sport (15marks)

  7. Task for Aggression • Individually • Write a newspaper report on aggression • Either, create a case study or research a real life case study (one has happened very recently!) • Develop a newspaper report • highlighting the event to demonstrate that aggression IS apparent in sport • Outlining what aggression is • Possible theories of aggression • Specific sports that aggression could be more common in • Sporting aggression more common in opponents of a similar ability than in contests between unequal teams • You have this lesson to plan and then next lesson to complete
