  2. The Great Commandment (Deut. 6:5) “Love the Lord your God...” 1. “…With All Your Heart …” A Volitional Action It is a decision It is an action It comes from deep within us
  3. 2. “…With All Your Soul…” A Very Personal Action The soul is the real me God breathed into man the breath of life, and man became a living being (soul) Gen. 2:7 My soul is my DNA, it is LIFE. It is the real, distinguishing feature of mankind, it is eternal My soul gives me my spiritual capacity
  4. 3. “… With All Your Mind…” Intellectual Capacity The human mind can reason, deduct, not just react (instinct) The human mind can think creatively, It can imagine things it has not experienced through the five senses. Although it can be conditioned by stimuli, it can go outside of its own experiences. 4. “…With All Your Strength.” Comprehensive
  5. Second Great Commandment “Love your neighbor as yourself” Who is my neighbor? The story of the Good Samaritan The Priest was considered the holiest person among the Jews; he taught the Scriptures, he offered the sacrifices for the people’s sin, he was able to attend to worship in the more inner parts of the temple. He was to reflect the character of God more than others.
  6. The Levite was to be a descendent of the tribe of the Levites, who by law had special religious responsibility and privilege. The Samaritan was not a Jew, although most might have had some Jewish blood. They were often the product of inter-marriages from various backgrounds. They were despised by the Jews, and looked down at as being inferior, uncultured, and of lesser worth.
  7. The Samaritan had mercy/compassion missing in the Priest and Levite. 1. Mercy/Compassion is based on Need, not worth. 2. Mercy/Compassion Feels something 3. Mercy/Compassion Does something 4. Mercy/Compassion Costs something 5. Mercy/Compassion Demonstrates our Relationship to God.
  8. What kind of neighbor am I? I John 3:16-18 “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
  9. Application: What kind of neighbor am I? Am I a true committed disciple of Jesus Christ who has a relationship with Christ that shows mercy and compassion, or am I a religious Christian who rationalizes my lack of mercy/compassion? Is my love for my neighbor (the one in need) as intense as my love for God? Have I decided to love the Lord my God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength, to the extent that it shows in my love for my neighbor in need?
