  2. Get Your Books! 1) Remember to get YOUR book, the same one you had last time (the list you signed last time is taped to my desk) – the numbers are on the top facing outwards. 2) Also remember: This book is your exit ticket. You cannot leave without handing me your book personally.

  3. Ch. Eight: Turn to pg. 88 in your book • Write the number and page of the chapter, and take notes:-characters? -details? -images? -metaphors?

  4. Hmmmm... What do I think ? • Describe the sale of the stack of lumber. How does Napoleon outwit himself? • What makes the battle against Frederick’s men different from the Battle of the Cowshed? How is this victory different? • Why does Napoleon get sick? What is really happening there? • What is his plan for the grazing-ground for old animals now? What do you think this means? • What is revealed about Squealer, and how do the animals react? What do you think of this? • What is happening to Boxer? • RUSSIAN REVOLUTION: How is Napoleon becoming more and more like a typical dictator? THREE MINUTE REFLECTION BREAK! Take seven minutes to write a reflection on the chapter -- should write a paragraph over the importance of the events.

  6. Hmmmm... What do I think ? • What are living conditions like for all of the animals except the pigs and dogs? • What happens to Boxer? What is your reaction to this? What does this tell us about their world? • What do the pigs do with the money? • What do you think of Benjamin? How do you interpret his reactions? SEVEN MINUTE REFLECTION BREAK! Take seven minutes to write a reflection on the chapter -- should write a paragraph over the importance of the events.

  8. Hmmmm... What do I think ? • What changes have the years brought to the farm? • How do the animals now feel about their social order, their farm? Why do you think Orwell does this? • What drastic actions do the pigs use to shatter the animals’ complacency? • All seven commandments are erased. What is the new commandment and how has it been true from the beginning? • What happens to the pigs’ appearance? And what do you think this means? THREE MINUTE REFLECTION BREAK!   9. FINAL THOUGHTS: Now reflect over the book as a whole, and answer the following question! • Theme: What do you think the overall theme of the story is? Why? • Use the P.I.E/E format here: • P: What’s your answer/POINT • I: INTRODUCE your evidence with a signal phrase • E: give EVIDENCE (quote – more than one in this case) • E: EXPLAIN how the evidence supports your idea of theme • Whatever you do not finish today, will be due next class for a PROJECT grade.
