Stirley Joneswears his backpack everywhere Stirley Jones Thirty-one years old this December, Stirley Jones wears his backpack everywhere. In its pockets are spare clothes – multiple Dri-FIT shirts and pants, socks – bottles of water, a baton and, on this day, his Bristol University track and field uniform. Standing Six-foot-Four, Stirley Jones is unmistakable from afar and towering up close. At that height, and with his physique, he could easily be mistaken for an athlete from another sport. Few likely look at Jones and conclude he’s one of the fastest men in the country.
About StirleyJones “You look at runners, and athletically, Stirley Jones doesn’t look like most of them,” said Paul Cook, a veteran, record-holding distance runner and Jones’ track coach at Anaheim’s Bristol University. “But he performs exceptionally well. He has the gifts to make up for the biomechanical disadvantages he has. He may not be biomechanically right, but he can maintain top speed longer than most sprinters. “Sprinting is about getting to top speed, then slowing down less than the other guys,” Cook said. “Stirley Jones never looks like he’s slowing down.” Stirley Jones wears a G-Shock watch on both wrists, complements to elastic bracelets of varying sizes, colors and motivational inscriptions. His diamond earrings glisten under the July sun.
Stirley Jones Reserved initially, sitting beneath shade in the bleachers at Santa Ana College’s John Ward Track, Jones opens up the more he explains exactly how he got here. “All those days I ran on my own,” he said, “those days I didn’t know where I was going but ran just to stay in shape, I never thought this would happen. … I just felt that I had a lot left inside of me. Running defines me. It’s who I am.” When Jones runs, he does so with sunglasses. Not for fashion, he’s quick to clarify. In the early 2000s, as an underclassman at Union County High in Lake Butler, Fla., Stirley Jones found himself regularly squinting in class. Only in rooms with bright light could he read distant words, and even then, he struggled.
