About MALG • Not for Profit Membership Organisation; Founded over 30 years ago • Working together to improve the lives of people in debt • The ‘missing link’ that ties together all the threads of the money advice journey • Open, non-judgemental, dedicated forum for discussion, best practice, and joint action between creditors, advisers and stakeholders • No commercial, regulatory or political agenda – uniquely place to seek ‘game-changing’ solutions
MALG Membership National Strategic Membership • For national public/third sector organisations and industry bodies including money advice organisations, credit reference agencies and trade associations. National Business Membership • For specialist companies including debt collection agencies, enforcement agents, commercial advice providers, creditors and technology providers.
MALG Membership Affiliate Membership • For charity and cross-sector organisations, regulators and Government departments. Regional Membership • For local branches of money advice organisations, Local Authorities and regional offices of creditor organisations including Strategic / Business members.
Widening our scope • MALG is now broadening its scope further to increase engagement with sectors such as: • Energy • Water • Telecoms • Local Authorities • Council tax • Parking

Money advice – where are we now?The figures • UK personal debt is estimated at 8M in debt • We are currently only reaching around 1.6M of that number • The Bank of England has recently reported the highest rise in consumer credit in a decade • By 2021, people will be worse off in real terms then they were in 2003 • It is estimated 1 in 8 has some form of problem debt
The future – beyond immediate challenges • How are we planning to build capacity? • How are FCA authorised organisations looking to invest? • What can we do together to tackle Problem Debt? • Is technology an enabler or a solution? • How far down the tech route can we foresee? • What are the opportunities for innovating around Artificial Intelligence and Big Data? • Will we see debt advice specialists in collection departments?
