Objectives • Various ways partnerships can be secured • How to best utilize partners to benefit students
About our Specialized Secondary Program • MCHS Biomed/Biotech Program and Center • 4-year whole school program
Biomed/Biotech “Program Major” • Prepares students for a wide range of careers in the medical, research, and biotech fields. • Courses include: Human Biology (UC approved & articulated with Miramar Community College) and Biotech/Internship • Combines academics with a hands-on, problem-based curriculum. • Students learn about the newest biological discoveries and various medical and research careers.
First Partnerships • Advisory Board: • Parents • Other friends and relatives • Teachers • Word-of-mouth • PTSA Newsletter: plea for parent assistance
Articulation Agreement • Mira Costa College Human Biology • “BEG and GROVEL” B iotech E quipment G iveaway of & G ood, R eusable, O utdated but V aluable E quipment for the L ab Petri plate (donated) with fluorescent bacteria
Articulation Agreement #2 • Dr. Sandra Slivka, Miramar College • College Credit through Tech Prep office • SCBC Director -- Grant • Donations of large and small equipment (shaker-incubator, deli frig, ice machine, consumables) Large shaker-incubator: donation from SCBC “clearinghouse”
Professional Development Programs • TSRI Teacher Seminars and Summer Training (Graduate students are a good resource) • Biotechinstitute / BIO conference • Pharmacology in Education Program Local resource: San Diego Science Alliance sdsa.org CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) cells growing in a bag… and producing human anti-cancer antibodies
Life Sciences Summer Institute • US Dept Labor Grant through San Diego Workforce Partnership/Biocom • Location: Biogen Idec • Training and networking over 4 weeks • Marty Ikkanda, AMGEN-Bruce Wallace • Teacher Externships: collecting business cards at 11 companies Marty Ikkanda, AMGEN and Annie Glidden, BiogenIdec
How to use contacts • “8ul ligase” from a contact at GenProbe Luisa and Mary, MCHS Biotech students
Summer Institute Outcomes • Formed a teacher “consortium” • AMGEN funded the program: lab assistant, materials for supporting lab kits Teacher Consortium
Academia Partnership • UCSD Partnership • Jeremy Babendure, PhD • Fluorescent Protein Transformation Lab
Industry Partnership Example Invitrogen • Cold calling: customer service • “Community Relations Manager” • “Past shelf life” reagents • Panel of Speakers • Field Trip • Mentor (Used) DNA gene chip: thousands of DNA molecule fragments are attached on the lines.
Field Trips • Parent assistance • San Diego Police Crime Lab • Genentech • Summer Institute / Externship contacts • Biogen Idec TECAN robot: Gene screener at Biogen Idec
Guest Speakers • Graduate students • Mentors • Parents • Scientists Dr. Sandy Slivka
Internship Issues • Problem: not enough internships available • Create an On-site biotech company modeled after a products company
Mentors • Contacts • Write a “job description” • Include time commitment • Applied Molecular Evolution / Lilly • Invitrogen
Mentors: How they benefit students • Visit students on site • Discuss project • Share contact information • Mentor “checks in” via email • Another source for consumables/equipment • Student does a Job Shadow • Mentors will be part of a panel to judge student projects in June
MCHS Biotech Company Products We will produce: • Educational Biotech kits with donated supplies • Similar to commercially available kits • Include teaching materials & activities • High School, Middle School, Elementary • Plasmids (DNA) to stock the AMGEN-Bruce Wallace Biotech kits at Miramar college
Colleagues • Teachers at other schools • Share best practices • Share donations: Reagents/consumable supplies Ryan and Malinda, teachers at nearby schools
Final Thoughts Partnerships come in a variety of ways • Networking • Flexibility • Resourcefulness
