Welcome to Second Grade! • I will introduce you to second grade and to our classroom. • I will introduce myself. • I may stop periodically to answer questions, but please feel free to jot down any individual questions on the index cards at the tables!
All About Me… • My background- • I grew up in the Plymouth Meeting and Montgomeryville areas. • I graduated from North Penn High School. • I attended Bloomsburg University for my Undergrad and Cabrini College for my Masters. • Currently working toward a second Masters Program in Instructional Media (Technology) through Wilkes University. • My teaching experience- • Completed student teaching in 1st and 3rd grade in the Central Bucks School District • Writing Lab teacher at Cold Spring • 1st grade at both Cold Spring/Jamison • 5th grade at Cold Spring • 4th grade at Bridge Valley • This is my third year at Kutz and teaching 2nd grade
3 TRUTHs and a Lie… • One of my favorite foods is pickles. • I wear glasses to read and drive at night. • I am the youngest of six children. • One day I want to go skydiving.

What's Been Going on? • Children have been enjoying school • Very enthusiastic • Having fun • Jumping right back into learning! • Team Work/Getting along with others • Independent Activities • Routines and Procedures
MY GOALS • To provide each student with the academic and social skills he or she needs to progress to 3rd grade • To enable each child to feel challenged, yet successful this school year • To create a structured, yet fun, classroom environment • To help students make new friends and discover new interests and strengths
TEAM WORK EMPHASIZED • Strong communication • Deliver the same message • Hold our students accountable • Celebrate their successes • Use “slip-ups” as teaching tools (“It’s OK to make mistakes as long as you learn from them”)
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES • Homework -To reinforce skills and concepts -Homework book/folder -Initial every night -About 20 minutes -Read, Homelinks, practice facts, spelling… • Snack -Please try to provide a healthy morning snack every day -I try to keep extras in the room for “Emergency Days” -PEANUT/TREE NUT free due to allergies • Birthdays -May bring a NON-EDIBLE treat to celebrate (favors/special book) -Invitations may not be sent home in school unless ENTIRE class • Parties • Planned by myself and homeroom parents • Will be asking for volunteers
THINGS TO REMEMBER… • Absence excuse note—the day your child returns. I will provide you with more notices if you need them! • Vacation?—Let me know beforehand and I will try and get work together! (TOTAL OF 5 DAYS) • If there is a change in transportation for your child, please jot me a note…If this change comes up during the day, you MUST call the office!!

Healthy Habits • New school policy on “birthday treats”=NON-EDIBLE TREATS ONLY! (pencils, bookmarks, stickers, etc.) • Healthy Facts shared daily on Morning Announcements and in Principal’s monthly newsletter • Lunch guidelines: • LUNCH=milk/water, entrée, and fruit OR vegetable • Without fruit or vegetable= A la carte and more $ • Home: Encourage healthy snacks
Fact Fluency • Practiced throughout school day during computer lab and morning/class work • XtraMath/Everyday Math log-in information provided • Progress communicated between home and school • Paper-and-pencil tests given in school as well • Goal: +/- facts up to 20 in 3 minutes
Social Skills • Read-alouds will be chosen to address social issues • Class discussions/meetings held when needed • Practice/modeling of schools in school through lessons and role-playing • Home: Please discuss “social situations” and appropriate reactions as they come up
Penmanship • Reinforced DAILY in school, from the very first day! • Handwriting lessons AT LEAST once a week • Discuss differences between “rough copy”/“finished product” and “jotting”/“writing” • School Incentive System: Grade level displays • Home: Encourage neat handwriting at all times!
