  1. Abstract Geometric Designs

  2. Bruce Gray • Contemporary abstract artist • Focuses on the relationship of colors next to each other and pays attention to the negative spaces. • Enjoys the dramatic vibrating optical illusion effect that is created by the use of opposite colors next to each other.

  3. Objective • To create an abstract geometric design in the style of the contemporary artist, Bruce Gray. • You will use design elements and principles to complete a composition of abstract techniques. • You will focus on the art elements: Line, Shape and Color and the principles of design: Balance, Pattern, Movement and Rhythm.

  4. Abstract Art • Uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition. • Abstract art can also be referred to as nonfigurative art, nonobjective art, and non- representational art. • Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms placed in a non-illusionistic space and combined into non-objective (non-representational) compositions.

  5. Art Terms • Repetition- An element that occurs over and over again in a composition. • Contrast- Refers to the opposites and differences in a work of art. You can achieve variety by using different shapes, textures, colors, and values . • Pattern- The repetition of an element in a work. An artist achieves a pattern through the use of colors, lines or shapes. • Movement- Shows action and directs the viewer’s eye throughout the picture plane. • Rhythm- Type of movement in a drawing or painting. It is seen as repeating of shapes and colors. Alternating lights and darks also give a sense of rhythm. • Geometric- Shades that are man-made, such as a square, triangle, circle, etc.

  6. Materials • Pencil • Paper • Colored pencils • Rulers • Circular shapes or compasses

  7. Procedure • Draw at least 3 sketches of your abstract geometric design in your sketchbook first (you need at least 15 lines or shapes in your drawings to create a balanced and interesting composition) • Choose one design, and enlarge it onto a 20” x 24” sheet of white drawing paper. • Use excellent craftsmanship while drawing all lines and shapes. • Color in each section using colored pencils making sure each color is separated (for example- one blue section is not next to another blue section).
