What is Green Building? • Green Building is… • Opinion and Facts (with the usual disclaimers!) • Integration of human needs and desires into a healthy whole system that supports and sustains the requirements of a healthy natural environment • Consideration of the building as a whole system from conception, through design and construction and for the duration of the life of the building • The building industry is the largest industry consumer of the world’s resources, consuming 36% of the world’s energy usage(Energy Information Administration www.eia.doe.gov)

Green Building Design Issues These 6 elements are loosely based on considerations in the LEED Rating System for Green Buildings- commercial guidelines (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, developed by the US Green Building Council) • Sustainable Site Issues • Water Efficiency Issues • Energy & Atmosphere Issues • Materials & Resources Issues • Indoor Environmental Quality Issues • Maintenance and Operations www.usgbc.org
