  1. Out of My Mind By: Sharon Draper Presented by: Mrs. Incognito/Team 3

  2. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed….. with unalienable rights,…. among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”---Thomas Jefferson This Is Not always true! Melody, the main character in Sharon Draper’s novel Out of My Mind, represents all handicapped people who long to be treated equally, but are not!

  3. Melody enjoys attention and wants to be treated like a normal kid. The attention she gets isn’t always positive.

  4. “ Hey Claire!” Molly said, twisting her arms above her head and bending her body so it looked crooked. Look at me! I’m a retard!” She laughed so hard, she snorted snot” Girls like Molly and Claire make it really hard for Melody to fit in.

  5. Melody wants people to notice that she is smart, but sometimes this backfires for her. This proves that people do not always respect equal rights of individuals with handicaps.

  6. “The only person in the class who got every single question correct is …Melody Brooks” p. 152 Melody studied night and day to pass the qualifying exam for the Whiz kid competition. “No fair!” Molly blurted out angrily. “Melody’s got a helper who whispers the answers to her!” “She musta cheated!” Claire added loudly. P. 152 Despite all of Melody’s hard work, some people still misjudge her.

  7. The Whiz kid team proves, once and for all, that people with disabilities are not always treated equally when they decide to proceed to the final competition in Washington, D.C. without Melody. As poetic justice would have it, they lose.

  8. “Why didn’t they call me? Why didn’t they tell me about breakfast? Why can’t I be like everybody else? P. 262 This shows how important it was to Melody to be included with the Whiz Team.
