  1. Economics, MAHS Mr. Rennier, Spring 2013

  2. Classroom Expectations • Economics is a challenging course • Economics is required for graduation from MAHS • Economics has an EOCT – End of Course Test

  3. Class Preparation • Come to class everyday!!! • Be on time to class • In your assigned seat and working on warm-up by the tardy bell • Bring your dedicated Economics 3-ring notebook, paper, pencils and pen to class each day. • Be PREPARED TO WORK

  4. Class Activities • Economics class is mostly guided, interactive, lecture and guided practice. • Keep good notes!!! This is most important • There will be class discussions and problem practice; it is important that you participate at all times

  5. Class Behavior • Only one person talking at a time. Raise your hand if you wish to ask questions or share your thoughts, you will be recognized. • NO SLEEPING OR PUTTING HEAD ON YOUR DESK—you will be asked to stand at the back of the room. If you are sick I will send you to the nurse. • NO FOOD, DRINK, CANDY, etc. Is allowed in my room. I already have enough pets and I don’t want any more.

  6. Cell Phones, Electronic Devices • TURNED OFF AND PUT AWAY IN POCKET OR PURSE • If you choose to bring it out or SNEAK it in anyway I will ask for it to be returned only to parent at the end of the day. • If you refuse to surrender a cell phone or other electronic device I will submit a discipline referral for “Failure to Follow Instructions”

  7. BAGS and PURSES • Place all bags and purses under your desk • The only material on your desk should be your economics notebook and textbook • Working on other class materials in not allowed • Bags and books are used as screens for prohibited classroom activity—AGAIN, PUT THEM UNDER YOUR DESK • I do and will walk the aisles so any bags or purses are a hazard…PUT THEM UNDER YOUR DESK

  8. Behavior Toward Others • Profanity, rude, condescending, racial, or derogatory remarks are NEVER appropriate even if “just kidding.” These remarks WILL NOT be tolerated. • If you disagree with a statement someone makes during an economic class discussions then you better back up your own statements with FACTS.

  9. NOTEBOOK • You must keep an Economics NOTEBOOK in a 3-ring binder. • Your notebook MUST have 5 tab dividers—one for each unit. • Organize all papers, handouts, notes, EQ’s and Warm-ups, quizzes, etc. by UNIT • This NOTEBOOK counts as on-half of your final exam grade.

  10. Attendance and Tardy • If you are not in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings then you are tardy—3 tardies will receive a verbal warning. After 3 tardies after school detention will be assigned. • I will contact home for the first 3 absences you incur in this class. If you come in after half the class you are absent for the entire class. After 3 absences I will refer you the the attendance committee. • If you are passing and have 10 or more unexcused absences you will receive a NC (no credit) for the course.

  11. Make-up Work • If you have one EXCUSED ABSENCE you have 2 days to make up any missed assignments. • If you have miss 2 or more days in a row due that is EXCUSABLE you have 5 school days to make up any missed assignments. • Assignments not made up in the allowed time will receive a zero (0) for the assignment. • Make-up tests will be ESSAY and Short Answer only.

  12. Late Work • Late work is generally NOT ACCEPTED. • Each situation of late worked will be judged on a case by case basis, but must have a compelling reason to be accepted. • Acceptance of LATE WORK is ALWAYS at the teachers discretion. • ALL accepted late work will have 10 percent (one letter grade) deducted for each day late.

  13. Assigned Seats • You must always use your assigned seat unless directed to move someplace else by the teacher.

  14. Class Dismissal • Class dismissal is not by the BELL • I will dismiss class after the bell has rung, and ONLY if EVERYONE IS IN THEIR OWN ASSIGNED SEAT. • Failure to follow dismissal instructions will result in the class being held after the bell.

  15. ASSIGNMENTS • Your class grade will be made up of the following: • Weekly vocabulary quizzes on Friday • Weekly content quizzes on Wednesday • EQ’s and WARM-UP’s turned in on Friday • Unit Tests (5) • Mid-Term Exam • Final Exam • Notebook • SMG – Portfolio—major grade for Unit 5 • EOCT – 20 percent of your final grade

  16. EQ’s and Warm-Up’s • Each day there will be a posted warm-up; completely write the warm-up then answer it to best of your ability—you may use any notes, handouts, or the textbook to help you answer the warm-up • Essential Questions will be posted daily. Write these into the EQ paper provided and answer them at the end of the lesson. • Beginning on Friday of next week—January, 18th you will turn in you Warm-ups and EQ’s for that week and this week. These will be collected each Friday for a weekly grade.

  17. Unit Tests • Each economics unit will have a unit test. These vary in length, but will normally be 40 to 50 multiple choice questions over material covered in class. • The dates for each unit test are posted in your syllabus. • The questions on the unit test are of the same type and level of difficulty as found on the EOCT.

  18. Failing a Unit Test • If you fail a unit test you may retake the test for a higher grade. • To retake the test you must meet with the teacher after school to go over you tested deficiencies before retaking the test. • Retakes must be done AFTER SCHOOL and BEFORE the NEXT UNIT TEST DATE • Students will earn the higher grade of either the retake or the original score.

  19. EXTRA CREDIT WORK • There is NO EXTRA CREDIT WORK for this class. • The grade you have is the grade you earned.

  20. Unit Sequence • Each unit in Economics is matched to a domain in the EOCT • Each domain in the EOCT counts 20 percent of that grade. • If you are having difficulty understanding the concepts in a particular unit you will likely have trouble with that portion of the EOCT as well. • In other words—PLEASE ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT; I WANT TO HELP YOU SUCCEED

  21. Work Ethic • You must stay focused and on task • Study your notes (use Cornell notes) • Write questions from your study to bring to class for assistance. • If you are struggling I will help you by reviewing the material with you. • I can’t help you if you don’t ask • BE SPECIFIC IN YOUR QUESTIONS • FIND A STUDY BUDDY • STAY FOR TUTORING—Tuesday and Thursday 3:00-4:00

  22. HALL PASSES • You will only have three (3) hall passes per 8 weeks. • Hall passes are only for EMERGENCIES; take care of you business before class. • NO PASSES TO COUNSELORS OR OTHER TEACHERS—if you are needed they will contact the classroom. • NO SELF-CHECKOUT from class; if you are scheduled for checkout you must wait for the check-out call. • Passes are always at the TEACHER’S DISCRECTION and should not interrupt whole class instruction • NO PASSES will be given during the first 20 minutes of class or the last 20 minutes of class.

  23. CHEATING • NO COPYING • NO OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE • NO GROUP WORK ON ASSIGNMENTS (except SMG) • NO PLAGIRIZING • NO LOOKING ON ANOTHER STUDENT’s QUIZ or TEST • CHEATING HAS A ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY • You will be given a ZERO for the grade and a discipline referral

  24. GRADING PERCENTAGES • Grading is done by Unit; all assignments for the unit will comprise the Unit Grade. • Units 1 to 4 are each 15% of your final grade • Unit 5 is 10% of final grade (SMG GROUP PROJECT is the major grade for this unit). • Comprehensive Mid-Term and Final exams are each 5% of your final grade (notebook is one-half the Final Exam grade and is due on the Final Exam date). • The EOCT is 20 percent of you final grade.
