The Zhou Dynasty . By Ryan Frow, Colin Flaherty, Nate Hadley. The Zhou dynasty started in 1122 B.C. by overthrowing the Shang. The dynasty lasted until 256 B.C. To justify their rebellion against the Shang, they promoted the idea of the Mandate of Heaven or divine right to rule. .

  2. The Zhou dynasty started in 1122 B.C. by overthrowing the Shang. The dynasty lasted until 256 B.C. To justify their rebellion against the Shang, they promoted the idea of the Mandate of Heaven or divine right to rule.

  3. The Chinese expanded the idea of the Mandate of Heaven to explain the dynastic cycle Which is the rise and fall of dynasties When the dynasty provided good government it enjoyed the Mandate of Heaven If it became weak, they believe that heaven would withdraw its support

  4. The Zhou treated the people well. They rewarded supporters by granting them control over regions. This developed China into a feudal state

  5. Feudalism was a system of government in which local lords governed their own lands but owed military service to the ruler Zhou kings ruled for more than 850 years

  6. Economy grew in China during the Zhou period Economic expansion lead to increasing population Feudal lords organized large scale irrigation systems Ironworking reached China in 600s B.C. This increased farming production

  7. Commerce expanded as well China started to use currency They used copper coins made with holes in the middle so that they could be strung on cords Trade also expanded with new roads and canals
