Many people believe that your introduction is the most important part of the essay, because it either grabs or loses the reader's attention. A good introduction will tell the reader just enough about your essay to draw them in and make them want to continue reading. • Start with an amazing hook. Your hook is a first sentence that draws the reader in. Your hook can be a question or a quotation, a fact or an anecdote, a definition or a humorous sketch. As long as it makes the reader want to continue reading, or sets the stage, you've done your job.
Don't slack on your thesis statement. Your thesis statement is a short summary of what you're arguing for. It's usually one sentence, and it's near the end of your introductory paragraph. Make your thesis a combination of your most persuasive arguments, or a single powerful argument, for the best effect. • http://narchuleta.hubpages.com/hub/three-pillars-ethos-logos-pathos#
Introductions and conclusions are crucial in persuasive writing. They make the argument readily accessible to readers and remind them of that purpose from start to end. Think of it this way. As the writer of an essay, you're essentially a lawyer arguing on behalf of a client (your topic – what you are for or against) before a judge (the reader) who will decide the case (agree or disagree with you). So, begin as a lawyer would, by laying out the facts to the judge in the way you think it will help your client best. Like lawyers in court, you should make an "opening statement," in this case, an introduction. http://www.usu.edu/markdamen/writingguide/24intro.htm
Dear Mr. Smith, As I waited for the race to start, adrenaline rushed through my veins. I came out of the blocks and sprinted straight ahead toward the hurdles. Clearing the first one, I could see I was in first place. Unfortunately, my right foot clipped the second hurdle. I crashed to the ground and felt a searing pain shoot through my knee. Not only did I have a cut that required stitches, but the doctor had to remove dirt and debris from the cut caused by our cinder track. As a seventh grade member of the Crownover Middle School track team, I urge you replace our cinder track with an all- weather synthetic surface. A synthetic track provides greater durability, more consistent results, and are less stressful on runners. I know you want Crownover athletes to be safe and perform their best, so I ask you to replace our track now. ANECDOTE ETHOS 3 REASONS THESIS
