Hebecametheleaderofthecontemporary bronzesculpturemovement.Heistheinnovatorofdozensof techniquesstill used bymanyartiststoday.Hebeganhiseducationinarchitectureandindustrial designattheUniversityofWashingtonand went on to studyavarietyofmediumsatCornishArtSchool inSeattle,Art CenterSchool inLosAngeles,theKobeUnioninJapanand CranbrookAcademyinMichigan. Histechnicalskillswerehoned fromworking onadvancedstyling conceptsfortheBigThreein Detroit –Chrysler,General Motorsand Ford –andwent ontointeriordesignforthefirst Boeing707.Laterhewasnamed totheprestigious post asArt DirectoroftheSeattleWorldFair. Inthemid-fiftieshemetDonaldBubyand in1960they teamed toopen theirfirst galleryin Bloomfield,Michigan.In1963,Moransettled in Carmel, California,andwithBubytheyestablishedtheirnewgalleryandstudio.Hewould becomeaninfluential forceinthecontemporary bronze sculpturemovement.Manyofhisinnovativetechniquesstill resonatetoday. OneofMalcolm's greatest honorswasbeing invited byPresident Ford andhiswife,Bettytohave ashowing ofhisart attheWhiteHouse.InadditiontoMalcolm'sartcareer,hewasalsoa proud
memberof themilitarybeginning withtheMerchant MarinesAcademyinCaliforniaand later serving intheArmyasaFirst Lieutenant during WWII.. ThisModernAbstract Sculptureinterpretationofafalconoriginallymadeonasmallerscale.A curiousOrnithologist heard ofMalcolmhaving livebirdsinhisstudio,suchasowls,pigeonsandPetethe Crow.Whenhesawthesmallsculptureofthefalconhewasextremelyimpressedonhowaccurateit was,it wasthebest interpretationhehaseverseen,and suggested hedoa larger one.Thispiecewasfifteenyears inthemaking. Thisoneofakind sculpture,ismountedonextremelyrareBigSurejade.Itisover100yearsoldand hasbeentumbledandnaturally polished bynature,undertheocean.Piecessuchasthisone arenowextinct.Thispiecehasbeeninthefamilycollection MalcolmMoranChildrenatPlay $50,000.00 19”HX 24”WX 12”D • • • • Thispiecewascommissioned byMr.and Mrs.EdgarKaiserof their sixchildren playing intheCypress trees. Thesculpture sitson twopiecesofveryrareBigSurjade. Thesculpturetookoneyear tocomplete.Mrs.Kaiser wroteMalcolmpersonallettersdescribingeachchild’personalinterests.Copiesoftheselettersareavailablewiththepurchaseofthepiece. Mr.Kaiserloved thispiecesomuch,heput inhiswill tohavethesculpturedisplayedonhisCrypt.Thefamilygranted hiswishes,but aftertimesomany peoplehad touched,thefamilywasworried itwould getdamaged,so theyhaditremoved.Having troubledeciding which siblingshouldkeepthepiecethey decided tosellit. Mr.&Mrs.Kaiser werecollectorsofMalcolmMoransculptures,Edgarkeptawharfscenealong withotherMoransculpturesonhisprivateYacht. Thisis trulyapieceofhistory.
