Bigger projects meantmoreemployees, morepaperwork, moremanagementandmorecomplexdesigns and implementing them, something Corteswas notprepared for atthis stagein his career. “If I gotalotof business I wouldn'tbeableto manageit,”hesayscandidly.“So I decided togo tocollege— Cabrillo College(inAptos, justsouth of SantaCruz) — and saw thatI had alotto learn, so Itook alotof classes and attendedalotof seminars.” Butthehard work and long hours paid off. Hewas ableto hiremoreemployees, takeon biggerprojectsand 10 years ago, expanded his offerings toincludegreen landscaping, water-savingmeasures andwhathecalls “hardscapes,”themorerigidand permanentparts of alandscaping project. “I likehardscaping,workingon arbors, waterfalls, retaining walls, patios and working withlighting.It'sachallenge,”saysCortes, who also changed thenameto better reflectwhathis business offered.Hesees landscapingand hardscapinggoing hand inhand in theultimatedesign and success of aproject. After spending halfof his lifein thelandscapingindustry,Cortes' motto is simple, buthighlyeffective:“Do thejob rightthefirsttime.
