WHAT IS IT AND WHY DO WE USE IT ? • Bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that cause disease are called pathogens. To protect patients from harmful bacteria and other pathogens during medical procedures ,aseptic technique is used. • Whenever skin is opened, you’re vulnerable to infection. Providers use aseptic techniques before, during, and after a procedure to help protect from infection. • Healthcare workers try to minimize several common kinds of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) by using aseptic techniques. • The goal of asepsis is to eliminate infection and prevent actual or potential cross-contamination from patient to patient, operator to patient and patient to operator
HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS Efforts by healthcare facilities to reduce the incidence of HAIs include an awareness that the CDC requires all states to report HAI rates fromeach hospital.
MEDICAL ASEPSIS • All practices intended to confine, limit the growth and transmission of microorganisms; clean technique. • giving an injection • emptying a urinary catheter drainage bag • giving a bed bath • inserting a peripheral IV • removing a peripheral IV • removing a urinary catheter
HAND WASHING • Handwashing is the most important way we can stop the spread of infection. • When should we do handwashing ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS! • When you remove gloves: may have contaminant or microscopic holes in them. • Alcohol based cleaners provide the fastest and greatest reduction in microbial counts on the skin but are not effective against: c-diff, rotavirus, or norovirus . • CDC recommends treating every person like they are infectous: UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS: • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when needed: • Eye wear • Gloves • Gown • Caps • Booties
SURGICAL ASEPSIS • Practices that keep an area free from all microorganisms. • wound care • drain removal and drain care • intravascular procedures (central lines ) • vaginal exams during labor • insertion of urinary catheters • respiratory suction
Healthcare professionals are responsible for following clean and aseptic techniques. If you notice that someone fails to wash hands or sterilize equipment, speak up. Doing so may save you or a loved one from potentially fatal infections.
