Theme An awesome life awaits the faithful followers of Jesus. Failing to take Christ seriously leads to empty life. Mankind’s Biggest Goof-Ups or 7 Powerful Object Lessons On Messing Up An Awesome Life With God This is the last week In Jerusalem. Jesus deals with the biggest misconceptions about God & faith
1. “Den of Robbers”: Failure to make room for prayer 11:17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’’” We give equal value to everything – crowding out prayer
2a. “Mountain In The Sea”: Failure to practice God directed prayer We pray our desires rather than asking what God wants Praise, sharing our heart, thanksgiving are also part of our prayer life. 11:22,23,25 “Have faith in God,”…“I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him… And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.’”
2b. “Mountain In The Sea”: Failure to practice God directed prayer • Confidence in prayer comes from knowing God’s will and praying according to that will. Faith means believing/trusting in what God says. • What God wants becomes the basis for our prayers. • First means of knowing what God wants is Bible study then asking God what He wants then listening in prayer. Summary: Supplication (asking for things – specific things) is based on knowing His will.
3. “Riddle of John the Baptist”: Failure to recognize Lord’s authority 11:28,29 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?” Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. We imagine we can outwit God Do we really act on the fact that Jesus is Lord? Or, are we looking for ways to excuse ourselves or do an end run around God’s will for us?
4a. “The Murdered Son”: Failure to recognize the Lord of consequences 12:1-3,7-9 …He rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed… “He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ “But the tenants …took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard… “What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.”
4b. “The Murdered Son”: Failure to recognize the Lord of consequences We imagine that we can get away with sin (rebellion) indefinitely. The mercy of FEW immediate consequences can lead to neglect of God’s will.
5. “Caesar’s Things to Caesar”: Failure to recognize the Lord of governments 12:16,17 They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” We imagine that only man has control of the governments
6. “Riddle of the Seven Husbands”: Failure to value Heaven as it actually is 12:24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. We imagine heaven is what we want it to be
7. “Riddle of the Greatest Command”: Failure to put Action-Caring first 12:32,33 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” We work at putting self-caring first avoiding agape
