ENERGY STAR Sales Value • In 2010 alone, Americans—with the help of ENERGY STAR—saved nearly $18 billion on their energy bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of 33 million vehicles. • Consumer awareness and desire for efficiency savings is high • More than 40% of U.S. households knowingly purchased an ENERGY STAR-labeled product in the past year. Of these purchasers: • About 75% report the label as influential in their purchasing decision. • About 80% report they are likely to recommend products that have earned the ENERGY STAR to friends. • 29% of these households reported they were "extremely" likely to recommend ENERGY STAR-labeled products. ENERGY STAR Qualified CFLs • Qualified CFLs are different than non-qualified CFLs because they: • Must meet 18 stringent performance criteria established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) • Including: • Minimum lifetime and efficacy requirements • Maximum product start-up and warm-up times • A two-year warranty for residential use • Product equivalency claim guidelines • Color quality and consistency What is efficacy? Efficacy is the measure of lighting efficiency and is calculated by dividing the light output (measured in lumens) by the electricity used (measured in watts). Like miles per gallon, the more lumens per watt (lm/W or lpw), the more you get for your money.

That means, based on normal use, a bulb installed in a newborn's nursery won't have to be changed until he or she graduates from college!

14. ENERGY STAR Light Bulbs: How to Choose • ENERGY STAR light bulbs are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and applications. Always: • Read the packaging! • Ensure the bulb will work in the appropriate socket • Find your preferred light color (i.e. Warm vs Cool white) • Check the lumen rating (measure of light output) • The higher the lumens, the brighter the light

How to Choose the Right Bulb for Your Fixture • Did You Know? • Only bulbs marked “dimmable” or “three-way” work with those switch types. • For recessed cans, only choose bulbs marked “Indoor Reflector” or “For Indoor Use.” Read manufacturer product packaging to ensure that you purchase the appropriate bulb!
