History • 1988 – Florida Legislature enacted the Solid Waste Management Act and created the Solid Waste Management Trust Fund • February 20, 1989 - Orange County BCC adopted three-phase recycling plan
History • July 1990 - Recycling bins delivered to 120,000 households
History • August 1, 1990 – Curbside collection began and Orange County Materials Recovery Facility opened • 64.5 tons of recyclables processed on the first day • Facility averaged 80 tons per day
History • 2006 - Processing facility upgraded with new equipment and ability to process single-stream materials • Facility can process 20 tons per hour

New State Goal • 2010 – HB 7243 mandates counties recycle 75% of their solid waste by December 31, 2020 • The bill has progressive recycling milestones, beginning with 40% by December 31, 2012

Current Program Residents can now recycle: • Plastic containers #1 and #2 • Plastic bottles #3 - #7 with a neck • Aluminum and tin cans • Drink boxes • Milk and juice cartons • Empty aerosol cans • Glass bottles and jars
Current Program Residents can now recycle: • Pasteboard (i.e., cereal and shoe boxes) • Corrugated cardboard • Phone books • Magazines and catalogs • Brown paper bags • Newspapers • Junk mail • Office paper
Current Program Drop-off containers now located at: • Orange County Landfill - Small Vehicle • McLeod Road Transfer Station • Porter Transfer Station
