  1. MATH Adding & Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers

  2. What Are You Learning? I CAN add fractions and mixed numbers. I CAN convert improper fractions into mixed numbers.

  3. Why Do You Need To Know This? • Adding fractions is important because many real-world situations deal with fractions. • Such as recipes, measurements, distances, lengths, and heights.

  4. Vocabulary • ImproperFraction: An improper fraction is a fraction with a numerator that is greater than or equal to the denominator. • Ex: 19/5 21/8 • MixedNumber: A mixed number is the sum of a whole number and a fraction. • Ex: 2 1/5 6 1/4

  5. Converting Improper Fractions into Mixed Numbers • Divide to see how many times the denominator will go into the numerator – this will be your whole number. • Your remainder will be your new numerator. OR multiply the whole number and denominator and subtract that answer from the numerator to get your new numerator. • Keep the same denominator. • Simplify if needed!

  6. Convert each improper fraction into a mixed number. • 9/4 • 10/3 • 9/2 • 20/3 • 22/5 • 29/5

  7. Vocabulary Like fractions Fractions that have the same denominator. Unlike fractions Fractions that have different denominators.

  8. Adding Like Fractions • Add the numerators. • Keep the same denominator. • Simplify if needed.

  9. Find each sum. • 5/9 + 2/9 • 7/12 + 4/12 • 6/7 + 3/7

  10. Adding Unlike Fractions • Find the least common denominator. • Change the numerators. (Find equivalent fractions) • Add the numerators and keep the denominator. • Simplify.

  11. Add. Simplify if needed. • ½ + 1/6 • 1/3 + 1/9 • 7/8 + ¾ • 5/6 + 4/9

  12. Adding Mixed Numbers • Add the whole numbers. • Add the fractions.

  13. Adding Mixed Numbers Write in simplest form. • 7 ¾ + 2 ¾ • 7 1/8 + 5 3/8 • 7 ¾ + 2 2/3 • 6 1/3 + 2 1/6
