  9. Essence of sin… For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 19. Defining the Problem A correct diagnosis of the problem is essential in intervening with a prescription which will ultimately lead to a successful treatment and a full restoration of the patient.

  20. Additional points… Powerlessness Unmanageability Horizontal vs. Vertical brokenness

  21. Redeeming Truth of Step 1: Man, as a creature in relationship to his Creator, has fallen from a place of dignity, humility and dependence to a state of depravity, pride and rebellion. Any attempts on his own to redeem himself are futile, only increasing the problem of independence and self-sufficiency. Therefore, because the problem is sin, apart from Christ I am powerless to overcome it and my attempts to control it only increase our chaos.

  22. And you weredead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, followingthe prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the bodyand the mind, andwere by naturechildren of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
