Working with adjectives • In French the adjective must agreewith the nounitisdescribing. • Remember, all nounsare eithermasculine or feminine, and singularor plural. • Therefore, the adjectives we use to describe a noun must alsobemasculine or feminine, and singularor plural.
If the nounis masculine, then the adjective must be masculine. Il est grand. Il est bavard.
If the nounisfeminine, then the adjective must befeminine. Elle est grande. Elle est bavarde. • To make an adjective feminine, we usually just add ‘e’ to the masculine version. • E.g. grand changes to grande in the feminine.
Adjectives must also agree in number. So if the noun is plural, then the adjective must also be plural. • Ilssont grands – masculine & plural • Ellessontgrandes – feminine & plural
Masculine adjectives that end in ‘x’ do not change in the plural. • Only a few adjectives do not change at all when they are used with feminine and masculine nouns, e.g. marron. Elle a les yeuxmarron.
Remember: when we are describing our hair or our eyes in French, we must always use the plural of the adjective. • J’ai les cheveuxnoirs. • J’ai les yeuxverts.

Prononciation • Don’t forget that when an adjective changes spelling, it also changes its pronunciation slightly. The final consonant of French words is usually silent. However, when we add an ‘e’ at the end, we need to pronounce the final consonant. • Bavard (silent ending) • Bavarde (we hear the ‘d’)
