  2. Early Years & Political Career • Born January 11, 1934 Shawinigan, Quebec • Studied law at Laval University • Practiced law in home town from 1958-1963 • First ran for the Saint-Maurice-Lafleche riding • Held different offices through-out his career before becoming a Prime Minister

  3. Becoming PM & first Term • Ran for leadership of the Liberal Party multiple times • First election as leader of the Liberals was the 1993 election • Main election promise was to cut government spending • 1998 was first surplus Canada had had in 25 years • Next issue was Quebec Separatism

  4. Second & Third Terms • Won both elections with a majority government • Government cuts had effected some areas so money was put back into those areas during these terms • Nunavut became an official territory • Created new underage criminal laws • American relations became important in his last term

  5. Fall out of Power • Chretien’s decision about the Iraq war was popular with most Canadians but not with his party • Stepped down December 12, 2003 • Paul Martin stepped in
