P1 F Wireless Signals Learning Objectives All; Show how wireless technology makes communication easier Most; Demonstrate why television pictures undergo ghosting Some; Draw a diagram to show how radio waves can be diffracted
Wireless Technology – 5 Min • Wireless Networks can be operated in many different areas. • Using the pictures below, try to explain to the business man, how it will make his life easier. • You must write at least three reasons to convince him.
Ghosting • Ghosting occurs when a tv signal is reflected from a nearby hill. • Two signals reach the receiver at different times, draw the signals on the picture below. • Label it up with receiver, transmitter and reflection.
Radio Waves can be refracted • All Electromagnetic radio waves can be refracted. • How would this effect the distance that a radio wave can travel? • Why is this important? • Radiowaves with a large wavelength and a low frequency are refracted most. • Which Radio Station below would travel further? • Brmb – Frequency = 5 MHZ • Virgin – Frequency = 20 MHZ • Radio 1 – Frequency = 100 MHZ • Draw what you would expect to happen to these three different radiowaves
Radio Interference • Galaxy Radio has a frequency of 95.8 MHZ and broadcast from Birmingham. • Radio Farmer has a frequency of 95.8 and broadcasts from Leeds. • Why can you only hear banging RnB tunes in chelmsley wood and not the sound of cows? • Extension – Why might you sometimes hear sheep baaing along to Beyonce. • Although Radio Waves use the same frequency around the country they usually only travel a certain distance. • Interference occurs when weather conditions make radio signal travel further.
