MEXICO Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated on May 5th. It’s observed by the Mexican community. On that day in 1862, the Battle of Puebla was won by Mexican peasants over the French soldiers. It’s celebrated with fairs, Mariachi bands, Mexicans native dances, feastings, carnivals, signing, sport activities, and the traditional Mexican food.
Getting to know about your classmate's culture and celebrations
The happy New Year in China is also called the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival. Observed by all the Chinese community worldwide. The significance is the first day of the Chinese calendar. Dragon/lion dances, fireworks, family gatherings, family meals, visiting friends, and relatives. This year will be on Feb. 3, 2011.
Eid Mubarak: Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha • Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha with the sacrificial slaughtering of sheep, goats, cows and camels to mark Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail on God's command. Muslims celebrate Eid on the first day of the tenth month in the Hijri calendar, in the month of Shawwal. It is held because Muslims celebrate the victory after fasting for a month, the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of Hijri calendar. Everyone dresses with new clothes and the children are given gifts, money, and have a big feast with friends and relatives.
Hanukkah Also known as the Festival of Lights Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev,according to the Hebrew calendar that may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. This year will begins , Dec. 1. It’s a family celebrations with traditional meals, exchanging of gifts, and the lighting of the candles.
KAWAANZA This celebration is observed by the Black community. It celebrates black heritage, culture, and unity. It is a seven day celebration of lighting candles, gifts giving, and great feasts. It starts on Dec. 26- Jan 1 every year.
FOURTH OF JULY Americans celebrate the 4th of July. They celebrate the Independence Day. They gather with family and friends for a picnic, and observing the fireworks displays .Americans wear the colors of the flag, red, white and blue. They show support and patriotism by placing an American flag on their front yards.
