  2. The Process involved in the Visual Perception System R: T: T: S: O: I:

  3. Gestalt Principles: • Closure • Figure-Ground • Similarity • Proximity

  4. Depth Cues • C • A • R • T • H • R • I • L

  5. Visual Constancies • The relative perceptual stability of size, shape, brightness and orientation of objects despite changes in the visual stimulus on the retina. • Size • Shape • Brightness • Orientation • ....of an object stays “constant” although our retinal image of it has changed.

  6. Size constancy • Maintaining an object’s perceived size despite changes to the size of the retinal image. • EG) When we see a person far away, the retinal image is smaller than if the person was closer, however we don’t think the person has shrunk

  7. Shape constancy • Maintaining an object’s perceived shape despite changes to the shape of the retinal image. • EG) The retinal image of a football changes when viewed from different angles however, we maintain its shape and do not think it is distorting

  8. Brightness constancy • Maintaining an object’s perceived brightness, relative to it’s surroundings, despite changes in the amount of light received by the retina. • EG) The brightness of a car remains constant on a cloudy day, as its surroundings have been altered by the same level of brightness.

  9. Orientation constancy • Maintaining an object’s position in the environment despite changes to the orientation of the image on the retina. • EG) Light poles, trees and traffic lights are usually perceived as vertical regardless of which position we are viewing them
