It tests both the intensity and the tone of sounds, balance issues, and other issues related to the function of the inner ear. A doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating hearing loss called an audiologist administers the test.

  4. Otoacoustic Emissions Test(OAE) • The OAE test is often part of a newborn hearing screening program. • The OAE test is used to find out how well your inner ear, or cochlea, works. • It measures otoacoustic emissions, or OAEs. These are sounds given off by the inner ear when responding to a sound. • This test can also show if there is a blockage in your outer or middle ear.

  5. Auditory Brainstem Response(ABR) Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is the best test available for newborns and infants up to 6 months of age that can provide information about the softest level of sound the ear can hear. This test can be conducted in a few minutes. This test is conducted on children or others who cannot complete a typical hearing screening.

  6. Pure-Tone Test Pure-tone audiometry is a behavioral test used to measure hearing sensitivity. This measure involves the peripheral and central auditory systems. Pure-tone thresholds (PTTs) indicate the softest sound audible to an individual at least 50% of the time. Hearing sensitivity is plotted on an audiogram, which is a graph displaying intensity as a function of frequency.
