  1. Conversions Resources Fractions Decimals & Percentages • http://www.ask.com/wiki/Fraction_(mathematics) • http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-54816694/stock-photo--d-percentage-symbol.html • http://www.iranian.com/main/blog/capt-ayhab/math-riddle-ii • http://www.mccc.edu/~kelld/CompFDP.htm • Fraction to Decimal • Divide the numerator by the denominator • Decimal to Fraction • Figure out if the decimal is tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc. If it is tenths, the denominator is 10. If it is hundredths, the denominator is 100. If it is thousandths, the denominator is 1000, etc. Then, remove the decimal from your original number, and place it as the numerator. • Decimal to Percentage • Move the decimal to the right two spaces. Add a percentage sign. • Percentage to Decimal • Move the decimal to the left two spaces, remove the percentage sign. • Percentage to Fraction • Remove the decimal, and this is the numerator. The denominator is always 100. • Fraction to Percentage • Convert the fraction to a decimal, then convert the decimal to a percentage. Janelle Kroll April 5, 2011

  2. Fractions Decimals Percentages Definition: A fraction (from Latin: fractus, "broken") is a number that can represent part of a whole. A fraction consists of a numerator and a denominator, the numerator representing a number of equal parts and the denominator telling how many of those parts make up a whole. Definition: The decimal fraction, now called simply a decimal, in which the denominator is a power of ten, determined by the number of digits to the right of a decimal separator, the appearance of which (e.g., a period, a raised period (•), a comma) depends on the locale (for examples, see decimal separator). Definition: The percentage is a kind of fraction in which the denominator is always 100. Example: 3/4, in which the numerator, 3, tells us that the fraction represents 3 equal parts, and the denominator, 4, tells us that 4 parts make up a whole. Example: 0.75 where the numerator is 75 and the denominator is 10 to the second power, which is 100, because there are two digits to the right of the decimal separator. Example: 75% which means 75/100. Connection: I really like to cook and the recipe ingredients are sometimes listed as fractions. I have to know how to read fractions in order to follow the recipe. Also, sometimes I like to double the cookie recipe so I have to know how to multiply fractions. Connection: I use decimals daily. One place that I use decimals is at the store. I have to use money. When I get change back for a dollar, I know that it takes one hundred pennies to make a dollar and that is why we use decimals with money. Connection: I have to know how to interpret percentages because my homework gets graded with percentages.
