SWEAT ABSORBING HEAD SUPPORT. Background/context. Due to lack of access to transportation and water, people of Rajasthan, India are forced to travel long distances, in the heat to fetch water. The water is carried in earthen pots that are of mud to keep the water cool.

Background/context • Due to lack of access to transportation and water, people of Rajasthan, India are forced to travel long distances, in the heat to fetch water. • The water is carried in earthen pots that are of mud to keep the water cool. • This can result in adverse effects to the individual’s back and neck.
SCENARIO • Navdanya: A program of the Research Foundation for science, Technology and Ecology (RFSTE) introduced a project aimed towards ‘Water Democracy’, to solve the issues with the scarcity of water in many parts across India. • Our scenario includes solving the problems faced by Rajasthani farmers, which is also an aim of Navdanya.
SCENARIO • “Most women and girls in Rajasthan find themselves searching water for much of the year. They trudge bare foot in the hot sun for hours over wastelands, across thorny fields, or rough terrain in search of water, often life the colour of mud and brackish…On an average, a rural woman walks more than 14000 km a year just to fetch water” • http://www.navdanya.org/earth-democracy/water-democracy
Background/context • Similar problems occur in parts of Africa, especially seen across the Sahel region (Sahara Desert), but our focus is on Rajasthan, India. • According to research and observations, women are more likely seen to go to fetch the water. • To protect their head they simply use a towel wrapped around the head and earthen pot.
Our Purpose • Our purpose is to invent a headgear product for similar adverse conditions the people of Rajasthan face, that can enable more efficient and easy water fetching. • To achieve this we have designed a product to fit the head and support the back and neck. This product will also be placed around the forehead to absorb the sweat and heat felt on the head.
THE PRODUCT • The design using materials such as nylon and spandex on the inner lining of the head gear because of its heat and moisture absorbing qualities. • The overall headgear will be incased with a rubber covering which will stretch so to leave room for varying head sizes and shapes. • As a support for the actual weight of the object being carried, we have decided to use rubber fibre cushioning to protect the skull and animal hair or coconut fibre coated with rubber.
Why these materials? • Nylon and Spandex: with extensive research we found Nylon to be the cheapest material along with Spandex to be most efficient in moisture absorbing. • Also used by Nike and Lulu Lemon for their exercise attire
Why these materials • Animal Hair/Coconut Fiber: they are insensitive to high or low temperature, moisture and heavy loads. It also provides good recovery to long term exposure to heavy loads. • These are natural products and not synthetic.
Why these materials • Rubber Cushioning: natural rubber produced from a milky colloid substance that is secreted by some plants. • This is a natural product and is not synthetic.
Our Partners • AVR Enterprises is a fabric manufacturer company that is willing to provide us with Nylon and Spandex fabric for our product. • According to manufacturers in the United States of America, a nylon (80%)-spandex(20%) mixture is approx. $8 per yard. AVR Enterprises has agreed to negotiate a cheaper deal. • Sri Ram Agencies of New Delhi, India are suppliers of helmets for construction. With their assistance and our design we can come together to create our head supporter.
Competitor • LOAD CARRY MH-1002 HELMET: used in coal mines to carry loads on the head. • This is an industrial product, therefore it does not include as many natural resources and is expensive to produce. • Usually made of fibre glass and cotton headbands
Conclusion • Our product can help create a difference for the people of Rajasthan. • With the help of natural resources we aim to provide efficiency in regards to the absorbing of the sweat and heat, and overall support for the body. • With this product, we aimed for designing for ‘the other 90%’ of the worlds population, and have ensured we do not contribute to the carbon footprint.
