  2. Eurostep’s vision • The European Union is a community born of a desire for peace. • It is based upon the values of democracy, equality, solidarity, social justice, tolerance, the respect of human rights and the international rule of law.

  3. Eurostep’s vision • The Union is the world’s largest provider of development aid. • This gives the EU both the means and the mandate to be a truly effective cooperation partner

  4. Eurostep’s vision • Europe’s challenge is to ensure that eradicating poverty is the mainstay of its relations with developing countries. • Development cooperation should be placed at the heart of the European Union’s foreign policy.

  5. Eurostep’s vision • Our Vision of a Responsible Europe is a union which upholds our shared values not only between its Member States but with the whole world • Which recognizes its role as a global partner for development • And which translates its commitments into results.

  6. Our vision is shared by many NGOs, civil society actors and government officials from the South.

  7. They expect a Europe which is more engaged with the problems of the South and the fight against poverty

  24. Why should Europe fight against global poverty? Because the majority of the European citizens expect the Union to apply the values of solidarity and social justice in its relations with developing countries.

  25. Why should Europe fight against global poverty? Because the European Union has a legal obligation established in its treaties to prioritize development objectives

  26. Why should Europe fight against global poverty? Because the European Union has promised to work towards the eradication of poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

  27. How should the European Union pursue the fight against poverty? By ensuring the inclusion of a Commissioner for development and humanitarian aid

  28. How should the European Union pursue the fight against poverty? By ending current fragmentation in EU development policies and establishing a SINGLE AID AGENCY

  29. How should the European Union pursue the fight against poverty? By allowing the European Parliament to fully scrutinize EU development policies

  31. We would like to ask future members of the European Parliament to commit themselves to development issues.
