Department of Social Sciences • Programmes in Sociology, Criminology and Human Rights • HEFCE centre of Excellence for Teaching and Learning in Human Rights from 2005 – 2010 • 95% of sociology submissions in 2007 RAE of national or international standing; 30% "world-leading" or "internationally excellent“ • A Human Rights Centre Crucible: sociology of human rights, Balkan Area Studies, conflict and genocide, consultancy work i.e. Amnesty International and the Scottish Human Rights Commission; research and expert consultancy on so-called ‘honour killings’, disability and hate crime, prisons, drugs • Migration and multiculturalism research group (Cromm) working on an EU migration, multiculturalism and diaspora studies

Crucible Centre for Human Rights Research • An interdisciplinary University Research centre • Home to experts conducting research, teaching and training in the field of human rights, social justice and international relations • Provides an innovative and vibrant base for human rights and social justice focused activities involving staff, undergraduate and post graduate students, visiting scholars and external partners

  7. Activities • Crucible organises and hosts public seminars, conferences and lectures • The centre is committed to creating a forum for discussion, debate and dialogue around issues in human rights to widen the scope of the Crucible's research.

Teaching • MA in Human Rights • MA in Human Rights and International Relations • MA Erasmus Mundus Human Rights Policy and Practice • Erasmus Mundus Post-Graduate Degree in Human Rights Practice (2007-11) and Post-Graduate Degree in Human Rights Policy and Practice (2012-2017) (in collaboration with Universities in Sweden and Norway)

Thematic expertise • four principal themes: • 1) human rights education, • 2) the sociology of war, genocide and global conflict and studies in post conflict reconstruction and reconciliation, • 3) globalisation, social theory and the sociology of human rights and • 4) gender violence, hate crime, and victims’ and prisoners’ rights. • Crucible also has significant geographical expertise focused on the Western Balkans and EU.

Centre for Migration andMulticulturalism • The Centre for Migration and Multiculturalism (CROMM) is a multidisciplinary research centre with an international reputation in the field of migration, multiculturalism and social and political change. • The Centre has just completed collaborating on a major EU Leonardo Project on labour markets and migration. • Migrapass - two year project funded by the European Union's Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong Learning programme with partners from Austria, Britain, Bulgaria, France and Spain

People • Members of Crucible and Cromm include internationally recognized scholars with specialist expertise in • human rights, social and public policy, • media and human rights, • gender violence, • post-conflict reconstruction and genocide, • civil society, NGO management and business, • EU human rights and migration, foreign and security policy, and green economics. • Staff at the University of Roehampton also have considerable experience in delivering training and educational development programmes across diverse sectors including business, civil society, public institutions and academia.

Public Policy Expertise • Crucible Centre and Cromm staff along with members of the Social Governance Research Group have established relationships with a wide range of UK national and international policy networks. • Applied research has informed and shaped policy and practice, supported capacity building and knowledge exchange projects • Colleagues have also offered research to underpin expert advice to legal and policy communities both in the UK and internationally.
