Introduction • It is a unique 10 digit code allocated against every pan card, and is issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade - Ministry of Commerce - Government of India. • It is the license to be able to Import in or Export out any product or service from India to anywhere in the world. • It has no validity clause, thus meaning that it is valid for lifetime as it is linked to the PAN card. • According to the Foreign Trade Policy of India, the following entities are eligible to obtain Import Export Code, given they have a PAN Card: Proprietorship Firm, Partnership Firm, Limited Liability Partnership Firm, Private Limited Company, Public Limited Company, Government Undertaking, Section 25 Company, Registered Society / Trust and Hindu Undivided Family Firms. • The benefit for obtaining IEC [Import Export Code] through the online portal, is that your IEC automatically gets updated in all the Custom Authorities across India. If you obtain the IEC through the local office counter, you will have to update the IEC with your port’s Customs Authority to be able to import or export any product through that port.
