  2. The famine • The famine started in 1845. • When potato blight was first noted in Wexford and Waterford. • By November the whole potato crop was ruined. • Phytophthora was Infestans Fungus was the name of the blight.

  3. HELP!!! • British Conservative Prime Minister ,Robert Peel sent Indian corn to Ireland. • Unfortunately the families had to pay market prices for the corn and they did not know how to cook it properly . • Soup kitchens were set up.

  4. EVICTION • The people get evicted if they can not pay their rent. • The landlord used to bring soldiers to knock down and burn the houses. • Many of the families were homeless.

EMIGRATION • Hundreds of thousands were left without any ,work, money or food which forced them to emigrate to America ,Canada or England. • Many people died while crossing the Atlantic ocean because of cabin fever . • Food was also very scarce and there were a lot to feed. • The ships were called coffin ships.

  6. Results of the famine • 1.5 to 2 million people emigrated during the famine. • An estimated million people died. • In 1851 the census showed the population of Ireland was 6.5 million.

Quick Facts • It all began in 1845. • A disease called blight destroyed the whole potato crop. • It was first noted in Wexford & Waterford. • Soup kitchens were set up and Indian corn was sent from America. • Many people emigrated to Canada , America and England. • They crossed the Atlantic on ships known as Coffin ships.

  8. Quick Facts 2 • The winter of 1847 was the coldest in living memory. It was known as “Black 47”. • The results of the 1851 census showed the population had dropped by an estimate of 1-2 million people. • The Famine caused a lot of pain for Irish people . They blamed the British .
