Bike Share @ SBU Bike Share Experiences SBU’s Original “Bike Share” • In April 2011, Bike Share Introduced To SBU Community Via Press Release • 30 Bikes Available, Solution Used Existing Bike Racks • Students Paid $15 Participation Fee & $15 Refundable Deposit at Bursar • Paid Students Visited Facilities Building - Viewed Safety Video & Completed Form - Received Helmet, Bike Lock & Bicycle • “Per Semester” Bike Sharing Service – Bikes Used to Travel On & Off Campus • Required Staff FTE: - 0.25 FTE: Sustainability Coordinator (operations) - 0.25 FTE: Bursar Clerk (payments/receipts)
Bike Share @ SBU Bike Share Experiences SBU’s Original “Bike Share” • Positives - Affordable Bike Share System 0.5 FTE Staff Time & Bike Expenses - Minimal Infrastructure Impact - Scale: Start Off Small (~20 Bikes) - If Possible, Invest In A Quality Bike • Negatives - Student Participation (System Access & Fees) - Bike Quality & Bike Lock Issues - Existing Bike Rack Utilization - Per Semester Use (Model Not As Efficient) - Solution Not Scalable to University Center
Bike Share @ SBU Bike Share Experiences SBU Bike Share “Crossroads” • In Spring 2012 (after 1-year), Original Bikes Required Considerable Maintenance • Community Requested More Share Bikes, Better Locks & Bike Racks • SBU Reviewed Available Bike Share Solutions • Similar To SBU Parking Operations, Focus On Municipality-Type Solutions - Metered Parking Lots: Parkeon Pay Stations - Parking Garages: Federal APD Access Control Devices • SBU Considered PBSC, B-Cycle, Current & In-House Solutions Recommendations • Based On Student Feedback & Trans Fee Research, Student Biking Covered Under Fee • Allowed SBU To Consider Municipality-Type Solutions • Consulted w/Student & Advisory Groups (USG, GSO, Commuters, Residents, etc.) • Evaluated Pro/Cons of Options • Recommended PBSC Solution to Student Community & Decision Was Supported
Bike Share @ SBU SBU Wolf Ride SBU Wolf Ride • In April 2013, New System Introduced To SBU Community at Earthstock • Students Utilize SBU ID At Solar Powered Kiosks To Access Share Bikes • “Per Use” Bike Sharing Service – Bikes Used to Travel On Campus • Student Bike Use Is Free (For 1st Hour) • Faculty/Staff/Visitors Subscriptions Available for Fee
Bike Share @ SBU SBU Wolf Ride SBU Wolf Ride • Currently Wolf Ride Has 4 Bike Stations & 48 Bikes • In Spring 2014, Wolf Ride Expanding to 8 Bike Stations & 60 Bikes • From April to September 2013, Used 3,600+ Times & Over 1,100+ Hours • System Is A “Zero Emissions” Mode of Transportation
Bike Share @ SBU SBU Wolf Ride Summary • Wolf Ride Similar To Other Systems On Campus - Office of Sustainability Keeps Spare Kiosk/Bike Components In Stock - System Requires 0.25 FTE Staff • Staff Addresses System & Students Rotate Bikes Between Stations • Student Feedback Overwhelmingly Positive (Recent Survey Ranked #1) • Requests For New Stations & Additional Bikes
