Fountains & Gardens Hospitals Sherbet Toothbrush Islamic Inventions ??
FOUNTAINS & GARDENS • The first recorded use of garden and wall fountains comes from the ancient Middle East. • From the 8th century onwards, gardens were recreated and spread across the Muslim world, from Spain to India. • 100 years later, the Abassiah created designs of their own. Gardens with geometrical flowerbeds, shallow canals and fountains were drawn everywhere in Islamic Persia, Spain, Sicily and India. • The Alhambra in Granada, Spain and the Taj Mahal in India are beautiful examples of these peaceful gardens. • It was in Toledo in 11th century Muslim Spain, and later in Seville, that the first royal botanical gardens of Europe made their appearance
HOSPITALS • The earliest hospital in Islam was built during the time of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him). • During the wars, a mobile hospital will follow the Muslim armies to attend the sick and the injured. This tradition continued until the first hospital was built in Damascus during the time of The Umayyah Dynasty. • Caliph al-Walid ordered to build a hospital in Damascus in AD 706. • Later in AD 1285, Sultan Qalaun al-Mansur built the largest of all hospital.
SHERBET • Sherbet derives from Arabic word ‘shariba’ which means ‘to drink’. • It is made from fruit juices or extracts of flowers and herbs, combined with sugar and water to form a syrup that is mixed at a later time with water, ice or even snow. • At the end of the 19th century emerged America’s craze for carbonated medicinal drinks. This was the source for Coca-Cola, which first spread across the country through drugstores and pharmacies.
TOOTHBRUSH • Miswak, scientific name Salvadora Persica, used in many Arab and Islamic countries. • Miswak is composed of a compact group of minute natural fibers that perform exactly the same job as a normal toothbrush except that it is made of natural fibers and may well be gentler on the gums. • Research has proven that the Miswak contains more than 10 different natural chemical compounds considered essential for good oral and dental hygiene. • Some of these components are stain removers and teeth whiteners, some protect teeth against cavities, some are bactericidal and antiseptic, some help in healing and repairing tissue, among others
