  1. The 6 Different Types of Surrogacy You Need to Know Surrogacy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Therefore, you must educate yourself about the different types of surrogacy that are possible.

  2. Gestational vs. Traditional surrogacy • Gestational surrogacy is where the surrogate is not blood-related to the baby she is carrying. In this case, the embryo is developed at a fertility clinic with the intended parent’s sperm and egg and is transferred to the surrogate’s uterus. The lack of genetic relationships allows no parental rights for the surrogate to take child custody in the future. • On the other hand, in traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is genetically related to the child. When the baby is born, she must sign her consent to terminate her parental rights to the child.  2

  3. Compensated vs. Altruistic surrogacy • If the surrogate is compensated beyond her living and pregnancy expenses, it is referred to as compensated surrogacy. Also known as commercial surrogacy, the intended parents and the surrogate can negotiate a compensation package. The extra compensation helps prevent feelings of indebtedness and regret. The surrogate can use this compensation to pay off a loan or a down payment for a new house. • Altruistic surrogacy involves offering financial assistance to the surrogate only for her medical and pregnancy expenses. It means the surrogate gets no additional compensation and will not cost her any money. • Make sure you consider your financial situation while deciding which surrogacy type to opt for.  2

  4. A surrogacy agency is usually a “one-stop shop” for surrogacy as they offer all the services to complete the process, from preliminary screening to matching and case management. • People unfamiliar with the surrogacy process choose to work with an agency to focus on more important things- building a solid relationship with the surrogacy partner instead of understanding the minute details of the process and legalities and finding the right surrogate. • However, those who have found a surrogate or an intended parent and are confident in handling all the details of the surrogacy by themselves can choose to opt for independent surrogacy. It means they will be responsible for everything. Please note that it might help them save money by not paying anything to the agency, but they have to take great responsibility for the process. Agency vs. Independent Surrogacy 2
