Concepts by Design: The Right Décor Sets The Mood…for Sales! Topic: Store Layout & Design By: RJ Sohler, Julie Smith & Hanh Nguyen
Overview • Décor of club determines its entire concept • Decoration and design are important • Efficient, comfortable, multi-purpose design benefits employees and customers • Three topic areas of article: • Consider the Clientele • Weigh Concept and Budget • Build in Contrasts
Starting Points • Factors to consider when planning the establishment’s décor: • Target market • Environment • Location/Neighborhood • Income of Target Market • Personal Budget • Return on Investment
Consider the Clientele • “When people get out, they want to get away from their everyday life.” -Pitaccio • Target Market: • People want interesting, comfortable environment • Décor plays a large role • Not just who owner wants in establishment • Consider locale, number & kind of people in town • Maximize space potential • Flow
Weigh Concept & Budget • Cosmetic changes to complete renovations • Worth expense to hire a professional designer • Help with space plan, overall décor • Can work with owner to choose finishes, colors, styles • Can be creative for people who aren’t • Consider function or space
Weigh Concept & Budget (cont’d) • Research demographics • Budget and decorating go hand in hand • Can accommodate for smaller budgets by finding creative complements
Build in Contrasts • Industrial materials are softened with fabrics, comfortable furniture, upholstered pieces • “You have to bring softness in because you have to deal with sound quality.” -Pitaccio • Makes music tinny • Numerous decorating options with color, finish, props, and furniture • Depends on goals
Field Research • Local Venues: • Tailgaters: bar too close to back wall • Clodfelter’s: hard to access the bar • Sanchos: small bar with good floor layout • Platinum: spacious layout, no ventilation • Endzone: too spaced out, easy to access both bars (up and downstairs) • Cantina: hard to use bathrooms
