  2. Alternative Transportation at UWM UWM is known for both its high number of commuters and small, condensed space. In fact, UWM is the second densest campus in the country! Alternative transportation is important to UWM because it reduces the number of cars being brought to our compact campus. Using alternative transportation saves time and money, and reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are pumped into the air. UWM currently provides four types of alternative transportation: carpooling, biking, bus, and a car sharing service.

  3. UW-Milwaukee Transportation Survey The graphs below depict the modal split for students and faculty/staff at UWM based on informationfrom the 2008 and 2012 Transportation Surveys. Although faculty and staff commuting choices do not differ significantly from 2008 to 2012, the percentage of UWM’s students who use more sustainable commuting options (walking, biking, bus, and carpooling) has increased 4% 2008 Fall & Spring Students 2012 Fall & Spring Students

  4. UW-Milwaukee Transportation Survey The graphs below depict the modal split for students and faculty/staff at UWM based on informationfrom the 2008 and 2012 Transportation Surveys.   5. Ridesharing Because of UWM’s commuter status, cars will always be a popular mode of transportation. However, the numbers of cars brought to campus can be reduced through ridesharing. Zimride is an online ridesharing tool. It’s a fun and easy way to share the seats in your car or catch a ride. With Zimride, you can find UWM friends, classmates, and coworkers going the same way you are. UWM Zimride requires an ePantherID to gain access. UWM Zimride helps you offer or request rides for commutes, road trips, and popular events. If you have a car, split costs by offering rides. If you don't have a car, find rides where you need to go.   6. Biking Biking is a great way to commute to campus because it not only produces no carbon emissions, but it is also good for your health. Milwaukee is home to many trails that pass UWM, making biking to campus very easy. UWM offers many resources for bikers. The Bicycle Advisory Task Force completed the Recommendations for a Bicycle Friendly Campus in 2012. Since then: • New Website: bike.uwm.edu • Showers added around campus • Intergovernmental discussions with City & County • Outdoor Pursuits in University Recreation will be undergoing a transformation of the former Ubike program. • UWM is undergoing discussion with Midwest Bike Share who is launching Milwaukee’s bike share program, in order to bring stations onto campus • 3 Air pumps and one bike fix-it station are on campus • New campus community events Free bike tune-up event in Spaights Plaza

  7. Bus Being located within the City of Milwaukee, students, faculty and staff have the benefit of access to extensive bus routes. For students: There are 6 local bus routes and 3 express bus routes in Milwaukee County that take passengers directly to the University. With the UPASS students get unlimited rides on the Milwaukee County Transit System. For faculty and staff: The Commuter Value Pass is a deeply-discounted quarterly bus pass for University faculty and staff. The pass allows for unlimited transit use on any route operated by the Milwaukee County Transit System (local routes, freeway flyer routes, festival shuttles, and special Brewers/Bucks routes).

  8. Car Sharing Service If you’re already using alternative transportation to get campus, that’s great! However, if once on campus you need to get around via car, Zipcar is a perfect option for you. Zipcar is a car sharing service, billable by the hour or day. University Housing has partnered with ZipCar to offer car sharing services to UWM students and staff. Nine vehicles are located at campus locations including Sandburg, RiverView, and Kenilworth Square.  Access to Zipcars is available 24 hours a day. Simply reserve online, let yourself in with your Zipcard and drive. Zipcar offers low hourly and daily rates, and always include gas and insurance.
