INTRODUCTON With the best comparative advantage of west Africa, livestock production in Niger: •  Is a traditional activity for 87 % of the population; • Benefit from the availability of over 620 000 square km of grazing land (pastoral zone) that allow production at lower cost ; • Has an important stock of live animals estimated at more than 38 millions (2012) of heads of cattle, sheep, goats, camels, donkey and horses representing about 2 000 billions of FCFA; • Has diversified species and races of livestock known to have a high aptitude in term of milk and beef production as well as the quality of the meat, the hides and skins; •  Economically, livestock contribute up to 12% of the GDP; its exportation is the second source of exportation income of the country (just behind mining resources), it represent 62% of rural sector exportation income and 21 % of the overall exportation income of the country

Azawak breed • Characteristics • Skin color: Tawny uniform • Height: Male : 1.20 - 1.30 m ______Female : 1.10 - 1.20 m • Reproduction performances • Fisrt Calving age: 3 years • Calving interval :13 months • Fecondity rate: 70 à 75% • weight performances • Mean weight at calving: Male: 23.97 kg ; female: 21. 44 kg. bw • Mean weight at adulthood : Male (400 Kg. bw) , femelle (250 Kg. bw) • carcass yield: 48 à 52 %

  7. Bororo breed • Characteristics • Skin color :Brown uniform or mahogany color • Reproduction performances • First calving age: 42 months • weight performances • Mean weight at adult age : male (350-500 Kg) et female (250 – 300 Kg) • Carcass yield : 40 à 50 %

Goudalibreed • Characteristics • Skin color: Dirty whitish • Height: 1.30 m • Weight performances • Mean weight at adulthood : male (400-500 Kg.) ; female (300-400 Kg.) • carcass yield : 55 % Djellibreed • Characteristics • Skin color : whitish or patched with black spots • Height: 1.15 - 1.30m • Reproduction performances • First calving age : 42 months • weight performances • Mean weight at adulthood :  300 Kg. • carcass yield  : 48 à 50 %
