Early Childhood • Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883 • Had a very sickly childhood • Overcame his physical limitations through his own exercises & body building
World War I • Moved to England in 1912 where he became a self-defense instructor in Scotland Yard • Was put in an internment camp at the start of WWI • Trained other internees with his new apparatus, which was believed to have saved them during an outbreak of the influenza
Connection To The Dance World • Returned to Germany after the war where exercises grew in popularity among the dance community • Migrated to the US in 1926 where he met his wife Clara • They settled in New York where they opened a Pilates studio in conjunction with New York City Ballet
Used after an accident occurs • Exercises are taught on Pilates equipment with a certified instructor • Used to treat back problems, hips, knees, neck trauma, & joint injuries • Instructors: Physical Therapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Remedial Therapists, Pilates Instructors with specialized training
Fitness related (general fitness), performance related (sports training), & remedial therapy (posture improvement) • Matwork classes, equipment classes, books, videos, & home use equipment • Dancers, personal trainers, & gym instructors
