Maurya Empire Ruling Style – BRUTAL (crushed dissent), MILITARY (conquered all surrounding kingdoms), BUREAUCRATIC (trusted officials maintained control) Leaders – Chandragupta Maurya (founder), Asoka Achievements – Spread of Buddhism, creation of public works (hospitals, roads, water sources) Decline – After Asoka, peace made the empire weaker…local rulers rebelled against the empire
Gupta Empire • Ruling Style – PEACE AND PROSPERITY (there was a central state that supported local leadership) • Leaders – None of any note • Achievements – A FLOWERING OF LEARNING AND INVENTION • Written numbers, including “zero” • The decimal system • Surgery and vaccination • Stupas • Carvings and cave paintings • Literature (fables and folk tales) • Decline – Weak rule, civil war and foreign invasions; more disunity again
Delhi Sultanate Ruling Style – Muslim Government (rule by the Koran) Leaders – Muhmud of Ghazni and Mahmud of Ghur Achievements – The spread of Islam into India causing vast cultural change, and increased trade between India and the Muslim world Decline – Nomadic invasions (Tamerlane) causing (again) disunity among states (this time divided by religion)
Mughal Empire Ruling Style – MILITARY CONQUEST, Toleration of faiths, paid officials rather than hereditary leaders Leaders – Babur (founder), Humayan, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb Achievements – increased international trade, modernized army (guns), land reform, improved religious relations, TajMahal Decline – Weak rulers, increased taxes, the arrival of Europeans
