What is Oxycodone Oxycodone is an opioid It is a schedule II controlled substance Oxycodone is know as Percocet Oxycodone is supposed to be used as a prescription to release pain
OXYCODONE • Acute effects • Pain relief , nausea, constipation, and drowsiness, shortness of breath • Long term effects • High tolerance and /or • addiction , and possibly death • When going through a withdrawal you can experience • Diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes, restlessness, insomnia, and leg movements
How does Oxycodone act on the brain Opioids act on the brain by attaching to proteins called opioid receptors. These are found in the brain, spinal cord, and other organs. This is how the pain gets reduced to those specific areas in the body. Oxycodone is supposed to be used orally or by liquid form The medication is a slow release, if a person wants a quicker release, then they might ingest the medication by snorting, or by injecting it venously The medication is meant to relax the body so therefore if ingested too much then it can cause one to have shortness in breath, and possibly death
Mice study • Researchers did a study on mice to see what their tolerance was on oxycodone and to see the effect on getting addicted to oxycodone. • The study was done on a four and ten week old mice. The study showed that the adolescent (4 week old) mouse showed a more sensitive reaction to the drug • The adult (ten week old) mouse showed to have a less sensitive reaction to the drug therefore the use of the drug more. This is a 4 week old mouse This is a 10 week old mouse
Mice study • The study didn’t show that a adolescent mouse would use become addicted to the drug in comparison to the adult. • Researcher's think that this is due to the fact that an adult would need to use more of the drug to feel the same effects. • This is due to the drop of dopamine in the brain. The brain needed more to drop the correct amount of dopamine.
Prenatal uses of Oxycodone Impairs Spatial Learning and/or Memory in Rats
What did the study show in rats • Rats had effects to their learning and socialism • The rats that were born to the mothers were showing • wall hugging” • Avoidance of other mice • The rats were observed through spatial T-maze, radial arm maze, and water maze Water maze Radial arm maze Spatial T-maze
Oxycodone Vaccine • Dr. Marco Praventoni, and Dr. Paul pentel at the University of Minnesota are coming up with a vaccine • The body would create antibodies to the drugs such as Oxycodone and Hydrocodone • This will help with addiction and pain control • The study has started in 2013 and is being tested on rats
Vaccine • The rats are being tested by heating pads. The rats are being tested on how long they can stay on a heating pad until they are no longer comfortable on the heat. • When on the vaccine the rats were able to stand on heat 80% longer than without the vaccine. • They do not have any side effects to this vaccine yet
Fifty Americans die a day from prescription drug overdoses, and more than 6 million suffer from prescription drug disorders. • As of October 7, 2013 Utah has been reported to be the eighth highest drug abusing state in the US • That is 59% increase since 1999 • In 2010 enough painkillers were prescribed in 2010 to medicate every adult in America for one month
