  2. What we’ll do today: • Learn about graduation requirements. • Learn about elective classes. • Explore our clubs & sports. • Give you your registration materials. • Answer your questions. 2

  3. Your Job = Graduation! It’s all about earning 22 credits. 3

  4. You earn a credit when... 1. Attend class everyday; 2. Do the work; and 3. Earn a passing grade. If you don’t pass the class then you don’t get the credit! 4

  5. Want to play sports??? You must: • Attend your classes everyday; • Do your daily work; 3. Earn a passing grade. If you’re not passing, …you’re not playing. 5

  6. High School Graduation Requirements 22 total credits: • 4 credits of English • 3 credits of Social St • 3 credits of Math • 3 credits of Science • 1.5 credits of Phy. Ed. • .5 credit of Health • 1 credit of Humanities ( world language, visual arts, music, and/or theater) 6

  7. Grade 9 Requirements • English 1 • U. S. History • Integrated Science • Math (Gr. 8 teacher will recommend) • One semester of Physical Education • One and one half credit of electives, … (You can take more if you want to.) 7

  10. A caution about selecting an “Honors section” • Changes to a different level will only be made in extreme situations and only if class size allows; • Success is about a manageable overall load. 10

  11. What Will a Typical Grade 9 Daily Schedule Look Like? 11

  12. Big Decision: Do I need a Study Hall? As you decide about a study hall, think about these things— • Homework average of 1-2 hours each school night • School sports/clubs/activities take time! • Balance school, home, friends, health. • Are you taking Music? World Language? • The 7 Week Drop Policy • Tutoring? 12

  14. When you choose anelective, remember that … Some classes are full year classes. Some classes are half year classes. 15

  29. Talk With Your Parent, Then Circle Which Required Classes You’ll Take: 30

  30. Then list your electives in the blank spaces: Please also circle your electives on the back of the card 31

  31. Talk with all of your teachers about your selections. We would like your math teacher’s signature next to your math choice to show whether they agree with your selection. 32

  32. Completing the card correctly: • Course code is 3 letters and 4 numbers: such as “ENG1010” • Math teacher should initial your math class selection. • Sign with your parent in the grey box. • If not going to Memorial next year, tell us! 33

  33. How many credits should I take? • Minimum: 6.0 • Maximum: 7.0 • Most students need a study hall. • What other commitments do you have? • Don’t overstress yourself. 34

  45. Can you earn a spot in Memorial’s National Honor Society? Reach these three goals by junior year: • Earn a “B” average or better, • Do some community service, • Be a good citizen. 46

  46. What will my first day be like? • Be sure to pick up your schedule in August. • On the first day, Spartan Mentors and your teachers will show you around and answer all of your questions. 47

  47. What to do now: • Talk it over with your parent(s)/guardian(s). • Choose your elective(s). • Get all the necessary signatures. • Turn in your course-request card when your counselor directs you to. 48
