Trials of Radios • Validating use cases, proofing technology and producing measurement reports • Helsinki, TEKES and Cambridge trials • Trials play integral part of dialogue between industry and local or regional regulator • Other countries allowing TV band use • Trials help to create early partnerships and understand market opportunities • Transitioning from trial use to adoption • It’s time for chipset vendors to jump in • IEEE and IETF standards needed for scale and scope
Database • Super WiFi devices in the TV white space spectrum will need to query a database to obtain channel availability information at a given location • There will be multiple database providers in the US and similar deployments elsewhere • A single common protocol for querying channel availability by devices from a database which is globally applicable enables interoperability, wider adoption and simplifies implementations • What is needed is a global standard that is spectrum and air-interface technology agnostic with flexibility to adapt to varying regional regulatory requirements
Database • The IETF is a standards body which develops protocols and specifications that drive the Internet and are globally applicable • PAWS: Protocol to Access White Space database(s) • Is an initiative in the IETF to specify a protocol between white space devices and databases • The specification work is in progress now • The PAWS protocol can serve as the basis for certification and use in super WiFi and similar cognitive radio solutions
