  3. What is Ghosting?

  4. What is Ghosting?

  5. What are some reasons GHOSTING occurs with Online Dating?

  6. Ghosting is breaking off a relationship (often an intimate relationship) by ceasing all communication and contact with the former partner without any apparent warning or justification, as well as ignoring the former partner’s attempts to reach out or communicate. The term originated in 2011. In that decade, media reported a rise in ghosting, which has been attributed to increasing use of social media and online dating apps. Ghosting & Social Media2011 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghosting_(relationships) Bartz, Andrea & Ehrlich, Brenna (April 14, 2011)."Don't be offended by online-dating rejection".Netiquette. CNN.

  7. In popular culture Ghosting appears to be becoming more common.Various explanations have been suggested, but social media is often blamed, as are dating apps and the relative anonymity and isolation in modern-day dating and hookup culture, which make it easier to behave poorly with few social repercussions. In addition, the more commonplace the behavior becomes, the more individuals can become desensitized to it.Others have suggested that it is due to the decline of empathyin society, along with the promotion of a more selfish, narcissistic culture. Ghosting is not limited to only intimate relationship contexts. It can also happen between friends or even family members, and be practiced by employers with prospective candidates. 8. The Ghosting Culture

  9. EMPLOYER GHOSTING

  10. The EMPLOYER Ghosting CultureATS – HCM – CRM Understanding HR & Recruitment • On Line Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) – 1990’s • The career site in 1995 in HTML every day. The ATS was just that – the system stored a 1000+ resumes received daily. • ATS to HCM - Human capital management (HCM) application services include services that advise, plan, design, build and implement strategies, processes and solutions for HCM or HR, as well as the operation and maintenance of such applications. • 2000’s CRM - The alignment of compliance for applicant tracking and the strategic aspect of sourcing candidates (Candidate Relationship Management) • Recruiting is no longer defined by tracking applicants. It is about sourcing and engaging a digital world. •  “Most companies have thousands of resumes sitting in a database that they’ve never looked at.” In fact, 75 percent are never seen by a real person. https://www.talentfunction.com/uncategorized/ats-applicant-tracking-system-20-years-is-long-enough/ https://www.cio.com/article/2398753/careers-staffing-5-insider-secrets-for-beating-applicant-tracking-systems.html

  11. Ghosting CultureAnalysts Viewpoint • 12/12/18 Washington Post: Analysts blame America’s increasingly tight labor market. Job openings have surpassed the number of seekers for eight straight months, and the unemployment rate has clung to a 49-year low of 3.7 percent since September. • According to the Wall Street Journal, for the first time since 2000, more open jobs exist than unemployed workers. And when presented with multiple opportunities, professionals are preferring to ghost than directly say “no.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2018/12/12/workers-are-ghosting-their-employers-like-bad-dates/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.3cddb2453f0d https://www.thelasallenetwork.com/lasalle-network-blog/3-ways-avoid-workplace-ghosting/

  12. Ghosting in the workplace comes in many forms including: • No-Showing for an Interview. This occurs when candidates do not show up to scheduled interviews. This can happen for initial interviews, or interviews further along in the hiring process. • No-Showing on the First Day. This occurs when candidates accept a job offer but don’t show up on their start date. • Quitting Without Notice. This occurs when an employee leaves for the day and is never heard from again. https://www.peoplescout.com/ghosting-in-the-workplace/

  13. ATS & Hiring Managers How are Employers Ghosting Applicants?

  14. APPLICANT GHOSTING

  15. APPLICANT Ghosting Culture

  16. EMPLOYEE GHOSTING

  17. What are some Employee’s Saying? • “I didn’t call,” Keel said. “I didn’t show up. I figured: No point in feeling guilty about something that wasn’t that big of an issue. Turnover is so high, anyway.“ • “My favorite,” he said, “was a kid who left a note on the floor in his dorm room that said ‘sorry bros, had to ghost.” • “Employees leave jobs that suck,” they said in an email. “Jobs where they’re abused. Jobs where they don’t care about the work. And the less engaged they are, the less need they feel to give their bosses any warning.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2018/12/12/workers-are-ghosting-their-employers-like-bad-dates/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.3cddb2453f0d

  18. Ghosting in the UK • No longer just a trend limited to the dating world, surprising research suggests that of the UK’s 31.2 million working professionals, over 2.8 million have ghosted their employer(2016). https://www.hrreview.co.uk/hr-news/61328/61328

  22. Companies can implement a few strategies to discourage employees from ghosting • Give respect to employees. A friendly environment has to be created, and respect for your employee goes a long way. Respect the employees’ opinions, even if you don’t agree with them. This will ease stress or misconceptions about you, the employer, or manager. • The use of direct and indirect communication plays an important role. Maintaining consistency among employees or staff is an important and tough task. The employer has to consider all related aspects and paint a clear picture of the process or instructions to the employees. The employer should never mislead and never over promise and under deliver https://dcdardentalks.com/2018/09/17/ghosting-in-the-workplace/

  23. Honesty about position & expectations Honesty is the best policy. Candidates sometimes ghost when the job they hear about in the interview doesn’t live up to the job as advertised. (Almost 20% of candidates Clutch polled ghosted because the job “was not a match.”) Don’t try to sugarcoat the job requirements or duties; be upfront about what the job demands so that candidates have realistic expectations. If multiple people are involved in the job interview process, make sure everyone is on the same page about job duties, responsibilities, and what you are looking for in a candidate.  Encourage the job candidate to ask questions during the interview process, and answer them honestly. Finally, let them know you won’t be offended if at any point in the process, they decide this job isn’t right for them — you just want them to keep you informed. https://smallbiztrends.com/2018/11/how-to-prevent-candidate-ghosting.html
