What is a Robot? • Most people think of robots are humanlike. • They communicate and do things like people would. • But that is not specifically what a robot is. • A robot can be defined as a mechanical device that is capable of performing a variety of tasks according to instructions programmed into it in advance. • Engineers design robots to perform complex tasks, ones that cannot be done by hand or are harder to do by hand. • Some everyday examples of robots include: • automatic car washes • vending machines • automatic doors • robotic arms used in manufacturing • remote control cars and trucks • automatic teller machines (ATMs)
I, Roommate - The Robot Housekeeper • The I, Roommate (Nuvo) follows basic commands spoken to it. You tell it to hand you a cup and it will. • If you greet it, it will tilt to the left, and raised one arm to greet you back. It will shake your hand and wink with one of the lights in its little head.
Nuvo is a prototype robot developed by japan. • It is 15 inches tall and has about 15 motors running inside it. • Nuvo has been marketed as a household helpmate and as a mobile baby monitor and security device, because it can send photos to mobiles that have access to the Internet.
