Warm-Up!! • C&S for GC • ECG in ER stat • Rx: 3 tab po tid q8h • Dx: MI and BBB, to CCU, ABG • Neokinetic Culture and sensitivity for gonococcus electrocardiogram in emergency room immediately Prescription: 3 tablets by mouth three times a day every 8 hours Diagnosis: myocardial infarction and bundle branch block, to coronary care unit, arterial blood gas New motion
Why Administer Oxygen? Blood must have oxygen Oxygen supply comes from air Air is approx. 20% oxygen
Why Administer Oxygen? • When an accident, injury, or respiratory disease goes into effect, the body may not be able to take in enough oxygen or use oxygen effectively. • Signs of oxygen shortage: • Rapid and shallow respirations • Rapid pulse • Restlessness • Cyanosis • Hypoxia(deficiency of oxygen)
Supplies/Equipment • Oxygen Mask, Cannula, or Tent • Humidifier • Distilled Water(only used with humidifier) • Oxygen Tank or Supply • Tubing and Gauge • Flow meter • Adapter • Pulse oximeters • Pen or Pencil
Ways to Administer Oxygen(flow rate) • Rebreathe Mask (6 to 10) • Used most frequently by rescue personnel. • Provides highest concentration of oxygen • Covers nose and mouth • Nasal Cannula (2 to 6) • Two small, curved, plastic tubes, placed one in each nostril. • Patient is instructed to breathe through nose
Ways to Administer Oxygen(flow rate) • Nasal Catheter (2 to 6) • Long, narrow, plastic or rubber tubes passing through a nostril and to the pharynx. • Inserted by trained individual • Tent (10 to 12) • Surrounds patient with high concentration of oxygen. • Often used for small children or restless patients who cant cooperate with other methods
Procedures (before) • Read the physician’s orders • Assemble Equipment • IWIPE • Connect tubing from the oxygen supply to the tubing on the mask or cannula • If needed fill container with distilled water. • Turn on oxygen supply • Make sure oxygen is passing through • Place your hand by the outlet • Put on disposable gloves • Apply mask/cannula to patient • Check surrounding area, caution visitors • Observe all checking points at frequent intervals

Procedures(after) • Turn off oxygen supply • Clean, replace, or discard all equip. • Wash hands • Report/record all required info.
